Righttrack Consultancy: Understanding Behaviours; the forgotten management art

The recent recession saw the focus shift from career enhancement and progression to just retaining employment. Clever organisations however, realised that strong people management strategies were just as important as other recessional contingency plans, which could include reactive marketing, organisational budget cuts and changes to work patterns, are now in a good position as the recession lifts.

Managerial styles change and adapt depending on the external environment, as they are directly related to a manger’s human behaviour. In difficult, high-stress situations, the focus on the softer side of management is likely to shift to the hard, tangible elements; meeting deadlines and budgets, productivity and efficiency levels, etc. 

This approach has been relatively accepted in recent times because of the recession, now the economy is showing signs of recovery, managers need to remember the importance of the softer-side of management; managing behaviours, communications and team dynamics.

As learning and development moves further up the agenda - the Global Workforce Study found that 57% of 20,000 employees felt the opportunity to develop skills and abilities was very important in their work situation - management training no doubt features heavily.

Understanding behaviours, communications and team dynamics are key learning messages in many management programmes and often a profiling tool, such as Myers Brigg’s MBTI, 16PF or OPQ is used to highlight the different styles and behaviours that feature in a team.

Management training has always been an important vehicle for managers to discover the tools and techniques of success, as well as providing the opportunity for personal growth. Whichever development option is favoured, as long as it enables managers to find out about their behaviours and those of their team, it can only generate positive results because, as they say, knowledge is power!
